Victor Joseph Baulard: Painter and Merchant in 19th Century Texas (1828–1889)

Victor Joseph Baulard, painter and merchant, son of Jean Antoine Baulard, was born in Besançon, France, in 1828. He immigrated with his father to Texas in 1843 and settled at Galveston, where he apprenticed himself to Joseph W. Rice, a painter and merchant. In 1853 the two men established the firm of Rice and Baulard, dealers in paints, oils, glass, and allied goods. The firm developed a trade extending throughout Texas and western Louisiana. Baulard was active in various civic, social, and benevolent organizations. In 1851 he married Clothilde L. Gillet; they had seven children. He died on October 3, 1889.
