John Tibaut Bowman: Life and Legacy of a Texas Government Official (1883–1937)

John Tibaut Bowman, government official and businessman, the son of Mollie (Tibaut) and Thornton Hardie Bowman, was born in Belton, Texas, on September 8, 1883. He attended public schools in Belton. He served as private secretary for Oscar B. Colquitt before Governor Colquitt appointed him secretary of state in 1912, a position he held for less than a year. In 1915 Bowman was awarded a medal for distinguished service with the Pan American exposition in San Francisco. He married Gladys Greenlee in Corsicana in 1916. They had three sons. During the later years of his life he owned a successful municipal bond business, Bowman-Roche and Company. He was a director of American National Bank, Acme Life Insurance Company, and Union Standard Life Insurance Company of Dallas. He was also the first president of the Texas Investment Bankers Association. Bowman was active in numerous civic organizations. He was a Methodist. He died on May 9, 1937, and was buried in Austin Memorial Park.
