First time uploading. Made a mess and I'm not sure how to fix it
[edit]The file Viossa Flag.png had a notice to create an SVG for it, which I did. However, I made two versions of the flag. One was an exact recreation of the original file (which due to a mistake (not by a Wikimedia user, but the external source) had a ratio of 593:398), while the other one was a one with a restored ratio of 3:2. The community the flag represents voted to upload the 3:2 version to replace the old one and keep the old ratio as an alternate version. The problem is that since I uploaded this fixed version, I uploaded an image that was NOT an exact SVG recreation of the old file. Later, we came to the conclusion that we should've uploaded the fixed ratio version as something like Viossa Flag (3-2).svg. Right now, the flags have already been marked for deletion, since the fixed version doesn't have any external sources yet to confirm it's actually being used. I'm currently waiting for a file mover to rename the files to hopefully fix the issue. Please let me know how we should proceed. Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help. JanLisaki (talk) 01:26, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Convenience links: File:Viossa Flag.svg, File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- And also: File:Viossa Flag.png.
- @JanLisaki: I've commented on the deletion request. I believe these will probably be kept.
The community the flag represents
: that is rather confusing. Meaning that the speakers of this pidgin dialect had a formal vote? Or meaning something else?fixed ratio
aren't all SVG files "fixed ratio"? How would you make a variable-ratio SVG? Or do you just mean "preferred ratio"?- It would be much easier to help you if you were clear what you want done. Is there a file you are asking to have renamed? If so, as a non-filemover, for you the "move" tool on the file page will simply allow you to make a request to have the file renamed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:41, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response.
- The community is built around the central Discord server, with probably 99% of speakers being part of it. I held an informal poll in this server for which the handful of eldest community members were notified (though anyone was able to vote). This poll asked whether the 3:2 or botched 593:398 should be uploaded on Wikimedia, with the other one being considered an alternate version. This poll turned out 25 to 11 in favour of the 3:2 flag.
- Yes, I meant "fixed" in the sense of "repaired, restored". Sorry if that was confusing.
- What I am planning to do now is rename the 3:2 flag to Viossa Flag (3-2).svg, and then rename the 593:398 flag to Viossa Flag.svg. I already requested a file mover. I can't request the second renaming yet because currently the 3:2 flag is still "occupying" the name Viossa Flag.svg.
- I was mainly wondering if this is a stupid way to go about things/if there is a better way to fix the mess this created. JanLisaki (talk) 10:12, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Just dropping a small note to vouch for this user and the situation in general. I am a moderator of the Discord server in question, called simply "Viossa Diskordserver," which has over 6,000 members at this time, hundreds of which message regularly. We did indeed have an informal poll about this (relatively minor) aspect ratio file problem, and this change is part of our group efforts to work on the Viossa article on Wikipedia [1] to remove the issues since it's a high importance article.
- Many thanks in advance to anyone on the helpdesk volunteer team who is able to assist with this small task!
- 💚💚💚

- No, this is not "a stupid way to go about things."
- If you cannot make the move requests in the normal manner, spell out here what file(s) you want moved to what new filename(s), but please do that explicitly in terms of file names, not circumlocutions like " the 3:2 flag". - Jmabel ! talk 03:11, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- Apologies for the prior language barrier confusion. The requests were indeed made by User JanLisaki using the normal manner of the "move" tool. This help desk post is to confirm that the procedure was being followed correctly. I will rephrase the request here.
- This is the original file: File:Viossa Flag.png
- User JanLisaki is requesting that File:Viossa Flag.svg be renamed, and I personally suggst "Viossa Flag 3x2.svg" based on other files in this page: Category:SVG flags with an aspect ratio of 3:2
- Following this, the flag File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg is requested to be renamed "Viossa Flag.svg" to match the original PNG version of the file (linked above).
- Again thanks for your time. Looks like you are a veteran of Commons and I salute you for your years of service 🫡 JezzaHehn (talk) 03:30, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

Saiō and copyright
[edit]I emailed Meiwa City and asked for permission to use drawings on their website of the saiō's. I am allowed under the notion that it's only used in Wikipedia. How do I:
A. Find the appropriate tag. These images are allowed used in Wikipedia in high quality. Just nowhere else (I will include all the appropriate credits that they have asked for and what not when uploading).
B. Verify that I have permission. Is there an email I can forward the one I got to prove that I have the needed permissions to upload these? Camillz (talk) 16:00, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Camillz Unfortunately, we cannot allow images only for use on Wikipedia. All images here need to be free to use by anyone, for any purpose, anywhere. Creative Commons licenses are the easiest way to do that here. If they are not willing to release their work under such terms, they cannot be hosted on Commons. You can upload them as fair use on a Wikipedia that allows them, the enwiki policy is at en:WP:F. HurricaneZetaC 16:04, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Could I upload the images under a non-free use license? So they can be used on the article related to the specific saiō? Camillz (talk) 17:42, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with them, but if they follow the policy, you can upload them locally (not on Commons) using en:WP:File upload wizard. HurricaneZetaC 17:50, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Before I do anything I'll explain better. The saiō were Japanese princesses chosen to be the priestesses of Ise Jingū shrine. The role ceased to exist in the 13th century. Very few have depictions, hence why I wanted to find some and upload . Camillz (talk) 18:21, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Camillz: Are these centuries-old drawings? If so, and if we are talking about simple, straight-on photos/scans of 2-dimensional objects (the drawings) then they are simply in the public domain and you don't need anyone's permissions. - Jmabel ! talk 02:20, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- If you gave a link to examples of those "drawings on their website", it would help to know what they are. The website of town.meiwa seems to have recent modern illustrations imagining the saiō. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:46, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Folklore 2026
[edit]Hello,
I am participating in Wiki Loves Folklore 2026 and uploading my own original audio interviews, photographs, and video recordings.
My upload rights were automatically disabled after multiple audio uploads. These are original field recordings with permission from participants and no copyrighted material.
The competition deadline is approaching and I have additional media to upload.
I understand Commons licensing requirements and will only upload freely licensed original work.
I would be grateful if my upload rights could be reviewed.
Thank you. Michael Charles Hussey (talk) 16:18, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Fireside Talk: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload them with full documentation as .ogg files. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:25, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Advice/Help with Category Creation for Newcomer
[edit]My apologies if this is not the place for this, or if it's so broad and dumb that it's clear I shouldn't be here. I also apologize if I over-explain myself, I do so to try and prevent possible suggestions I have already tried, and any later frustration I have trying to re-explain myself. I am doing my best and do not mean to clog up the feed.
I am trying to make my first category, which I have decided will be Category:Martadoris. It will be filed under Category:Nembrothinae. I know it is very important that I do this correctly, but there is so much data on taxon pages that it makes me think there might be semi-automated ways to create or format them. I'm trying to figure out if I need to enter all of this information by hand (which I might be able to do by comparing source code from other genuses and adjusting for Martadoris, but that whole idea seems like a red flag), and there seems to be so much data in other genus pages that I don't even know where the data comes from and what to include and. It's A Lot. Category:Nembrothinae
I am brand new to wikimedia and do not have technical experience of any kind. I have combed through the help pages best I could, and most of it is irrelevant to what I need to do, and the rest is so incomprehensible to me that I cannot even tell if it's useful or not. I cannot even figure out what templates are, I get caught in a tutorial link loop that doesn't seem to lead to anywhere.
I know I could create discussions on relevant pages that need new categories, but I really have a to-do list a mile long and it's no good making some other poor editor do all the work. Besides, I'm the one who has spent hundreds of edits resorting nudibranch photos according to their corrected species ID, I have a passion for sorting and for correcting misinformation and it will really benefit everyone if I figure out how to do this myself.
Um. So all that to say. Any advice/guidance/links/tutorials/anything pertaining to the creation of taxon categories? If there's a tutorial just for this I've fully missed it. Thank you for your patience. Snapplejackalope (talk) 17:14, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Snapplejackalope: I doubt there really is a manual on this, beyond the fact that probably each of the templates involved is documented on its template page. I've done a few taxonomy categories; I've done it mostly by imitating what I saw on other such categories. A lot of what you need (tracing up the taxonomic hierarchy) you can got from Category:Nembrothinae or (better yet) any of its subcats
- By far the trickiest part of this is the "interwiki" linking, because that is done on a different wiki, Wikidata. In this case I found that there already is a relevant Wikidata item (Martadoris (Q56279545)), so I am taking the first few steps for you, because they are the least intuitive.
- Create a very stripped-down Category:Martadoris: [2]
- Link that from Wikidata: [3]
- I'm guessing you can take it from there. - Jmabel ! talk 19:46, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- You are an absolute saint. I still have no idea how you did that, but I'm very grateful. Snapplejackalope (talk) 00:00, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Snapplejackalope: if you tell me what remains unclear even retrospectively about how I did any of these steps, feel free to ask (including a bit less publicly on my user talk page). - Jmabel ! talk 03:22, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

Torrrenr (talk) 14:37, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- I translated your text (with help by ChatGPT): "Lieutenant Nasukhov Madrit Ramazanovich, born in 1995 in the village of Ikhrek, Rutulsky District, Dagestan. From childhood, he dreamed of becoming a military officer and, following a family tradition, joined military service. Nasukhov was passionate about sports from an early age, actively engaged in football and freestyle wrestling, and also showed interest in literature, preferring poetry and detective novels.
- In 2017, he was drafted into service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. He immediately liked military life, and after several months of service he signed a contract with the 205th Separate Motorized Rifle Cossack Brigade. In 2020, Nasukhov continued his service in the 30th Engineer-Sapper Regiment of the 6th Combined Arms Red Banner Army, where he began his career as a junior sergeant and was later promoted to sergeant.
- During his participation in the special military operation (SMO), he sustained a serious injury, after which he was promoted to junior lieutenant. Nasukhov emphasized that for him military service is not just a duty but a way to demonstrate dedication to his profession in practice. He noted the importance of compulsory military service for every man, stressing that it develops qualities such as purposefulness, resilience, endurance, and discipline.
- While participating in the SMO, Nasukhov trained new recruits, provided humanitarian aid to civilians, and carried out mine clearance operations to ensure safety for the civilian population. For his demonstrated heroism, Junior Lieutenant Nasukhov was awarded the Order of Courage and the Medal “For Combat Distinction.” Despite the injury he sustained, he continues to actively participate in military activities and plans further professional development. project scope: how much photoshopping is too much?
[edit]I was thinking about this upload of mine and its heavy use of photoshop, and start contemplating on the issue of "where does the educational value of post processing end and artistic styling start".
Specifically, would the image be more informative in its less processed / stylized form, when it better resembles what one would see the scene with their eyes? Or would it not matter, or would it be better to upload photoshopped forms along side original file so to give other editors the choice? IrisChronomia (talk) 14:42, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- @IrisChronomia: There are several valid approaches to this.
- My usual approach: upload the unretouched image first, then overwrite it. A couple of examples of that uploaded within the last 24 hours: File:Geneva, NY - Lynch Brother’s Building 01.jpg, File:Geneva, NY - YMCA 01.jpg.
- If the nature of the retouching might be less obvious, I explain with {{Retouched}}: File:Seattle - Gas Works Park from the water, early evening - 2025-07-09 - 01.jpg.
- Another example, where I thought someone might consider my retouching too "undocumentary", so I made both versions available under different filenames: File:Maryhill Museum - Rodin - Fallen Caryatid Bearing Her Stone (c. 1881) - 03 - cropped, retouched.jpg and the (linked) other version.
- My usual approach: upload the unretouched image first, then overwrite it. A couple of examples of that uploaded within the last 24 hours: File:Geneva, NY - Lynch Brother’s Building 01.jpg, File:Geneva, NY - YMCA 01.jpg.
- I'm sure there are other equally valid ways to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice! I'm also thinking about uploading both RAW/original files along side edited ones; thanks for telling me that it's okay and is not an extravagent use of WMF servers' storage spaces. :) IrisChronomia (talk) 03:50, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

remove photos
[edit]Dear Team,
I need two photos removed/deleted, please as they are probably not free. I cannot enter at all times, only when the library is open + the artist of the statue has not died 70 years ago.
1. Herman Kesten Statue + 2. Herman Kesten Café outside. Both uploaded today by Chhelp.
Thank you very much Chhelp Chhelp (talk) 22:46, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Per a previous exchange on DE-WP: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Hermann Kesten Statue im Hof des Herrmann Kesten Café der Stadtbibliothek Nürnberg.jpg; but I would still defend my opinion that File:Hermann Kesten Café Hof.jpg is fine on copyrights. - Dear everybody,
- I am the photographer and would be happy for the two photos (Herman Kesten Statue + Herman Kesten café outside - but first one has to enter the library when it is open to get there) to be removed/deleted as I do not want to pay any fines.
- Thank you for your understanding Chhelp (talk) 23:07, 28 February 2026 (UTC)

Subject: Help with my account (Ali Boubacar)
[edit]Hello. I am Ali Boubacar.
My account was unblocked by Yann on February 6, 2026, but I have a problem: I cannot log in. I do not have access to the email address for that account and I don't remember which one it was.
I want to make sure I follow all the rules and don't make any mistakes.
- Can you help me get back into my old account without the email?
- Or, should I just create a new account and link it to this discussion so everyone knows it is me?
I want to do this the right way so there is no more confusion. What should I do?
Thank you, ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 04:56, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-99879-2: We don't have an account with that exact name. Have you tried using Special:PasswordReset and checking all your email accounts for the result? See also Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/ALi BOUBACAR. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:59, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

To Jeff G., Achim55, and The Squirrel Conspiracy
[edit]I am sorry for any confusion, but I want to be 100% clear: I am Ali Boubacar and the account I need help with is User:ALi BOUBACAR. I cannot use the Password Reset because I do not have access to the email address anymore. I really want to use my original account instead of a new one. Is there any other way to prove my identity to you so I can get back in? Thank you for your patience. ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 19:03, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-99879-2: There would be no point; you are indefinitely blocked for "Spamming | Abuse of multiple accounts". I hope an Admin shows you the door. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:39, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- I am writing to clarify everything so there is no more confusion. I did not personally create the account User:ALi BOUBACAR or the email attached to it; it was set up by others who were trying to help me. This is why I do not have the password or email access.I have now taken full control of my presence here and I have strictly ordered everyone else to stop. I want to use this specific account because Yann unblocked it on February 6, 2026, after reviewing my case.My only goal is to follow the rules and contribute correctly as I promised. I am asking for your help to gain access to this one account so I can manage it personally and ensure no more mistakes are made. Please check my Talk Page to see that I have permission from Yann to be here. Thank you. ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 02:12, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-99879-2: Please don't start a new discussion thread each time you want to post about this. The best advice anyone can give you is to read COM:UNBLOCK. If after doing so you still want to request your account be unblocked, you should do so on the user talk page of the blocked account. Posting that you want to be unblocked here is not going to get you anywhere. Please understand, though, accounts blocked for sock puppetry are almost never unblocked except when a Commons administrator really feels there's pretty much no chance of the same behavior being repeated and only usually only after six months or so has passed since the account was blocked. Moreover, if you don't have password access or the ability to reset your account's password by email to the blocked account, there's really no way for Commons to give that to you. You most likely will just need to create a new account and use that instead. You can, if you want, post something on your new account's user talk page connecting the accounts and explaining that you were unable to access the old one. Finally, please understand that blocks and conditions for being unblocked apply to you as a user regardless of which account you use to edit Commons. So, if you're successful in being unblocked but repeat the same behavior as before, you're likely going to end up blocked again without any warning. So, I strongly suggest you make the password of any new account you create is secure and nobody else can access the account. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:37, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you, Marchjuly. I really appreciate this clear advice. I want to explain that the reason I sent so many emails and posted on my Talk Page was because I was waiting to hear exactly what you just told me. I was afraid that if I created a new account without permission, it would be seen as another mistake.
- Now that I have your guidance, I will stop sending messages here and go create one new official account that I will control personally. Once it is created, I will post a note on my old Talk Page to explain the transition. Thank you for helping me do this the right way.
- ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 03:57, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- I have now created this account, ABB-NE, as my one official account. I am now in full control of my presence here and will follow all rules. Thank you for the guidance.
- ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 04:36, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @ABB-NE: You still need to get unblocked, though, before taking any other activity here. Uploading or editing content will be seen as block evasion. I suggest that you use this new account to ask at User talk:ALi BOUBACAR to be unblocked. It is unusual (to say the least) to set up a new account while blocked, but in the circumstances I can see how it could be reasonable. Feel free to name and quote me on that when requesting an unblock. ALSO: be aware the Commons is not intended for self-promotion. If someone determines that it would be appropriate to remove the block and consider this a valid new single account, rather than block evasion, do not go back to posting files about yourself or you will certainly be blocked again. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @ABB-NE: From what was posted on your user talk page, I was assuming that your other account had been unblocked because Yann approved your unblock request and you just lost access to it. Your old account still appears to be under the same blocked applied by the The Squirrel Conspiracy back in December 2026. I'm not a Commons administrator and might've given you bad advice about creating a new account. Anyway, I've asked the blocking admin to take a look at this discussion, and perhaps they will clarify what if anything else you might need to do. For the time being, it might be a good idea to do as Jmabel (who is a Commons administrator) suggests and refrain from any activity with your new account until your old one can be sorted out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:09, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- To the Administrators: I am very frustrated because I have been trying to follow the rules for a month. I sent my National ID card and my explanation by email 30 days ago, but no one replied.
- I only created this new account (ABB-NE) because I was told to on this Help Desk. I thought that person was a Minister (Administrator). If I had known they were not, I would have continued to wait for you.
- I am not trying to hide or create 'socks.' I am the real Ali Boubacar, and I have already proven it in the emails you have. Please check the email system (VRT) for my ID and help me settle this once and for all. ABB-NE (talk) 12:30, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

- Hi, I can't do anything if they lost the password, and do not have email access. Now this user has created 7 socks, so a proper unblock request with a clear commitment is needed. This should happen to the account talk page, not here. Yann (talk) 08:27, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

I would very much like to replace his photograph, because the current one does not reflect his true character (incidentally, I myself uploaded it during his lifetime). I managed to do this in the English-language Wikipedia, but in the Russian-language version I cannot succeed. Please help.

- It is strange that you cannot change it on Russian Wikipedia. Can you explain more? Or you can visit [5].

[edit]Hi all,
this file was uploaded 4 days ago but contains no description or context. TinEye didn't return a match (that would at least support the statement that it's the uploader's own work). I pinged the uploader on the file's talk page. Supposing they don't answer, is this eligible for deletion due to lack of information? If so, how long should I wait? - @Barbalalaika: Hi, No, it is not eligible for deletion just for missing a good description, if it is really the freely licensed work of the uploader and it is in scope. For now, it could be categorized at least, with some other files, in a Category:Perna cabeluda to be created. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:57, 3 March 2026 (UTC)

Dirk Liesch (talk) 17:19, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Dirk Liesch: Vielleicht https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Common_thumbnail_sizes#FAQ?
Dirk Liesch (talk) 07:52, 5 March 2026 (UTC)

Critical error with ‘use this file on web’ functions
[edit]The integration of images from Commons no longer works to a large extent. I described the problem here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Help_desk#Warum_funktioniert_das_Einbinden_eines_Bildes_in_eine_externe_Website_nicht_ (see example). The cause (according to my tests) is that ‘use this file on web’ (or ‘embed’) works with image sizes such as ‘256’ or ‘512’, while technically it has obviously been changed to “250” and ‘500’! If I manually change the 256 or 512 to 250 or 500 in the ‘Embeds’ in the ‘Thumbnail Link’, it works again. With my extremely large number of affected pages from the last 10 years (which I cannot automatically adjust myself), this is extremely annoying. But even the current ‘use this file on web’ template (on German Wikimedia Commons) still offers the old values (which no longer work) – so it is currently inoperable (no longer works). However, it would make sense for the ‘previous solutions’ in the existing world, such as my many pages, to continue to work, e.g. by redirecting the “256” link versions to the new ‘250’ versions. (This applies to the other sizes as well, of course: 512=>500, etc.) Or is there already an elegant solution for automatically changing the format in ‘externally hosted’ websites (in my case, Strato)? It would also be very unfavourable for the ‘use this file on web’ function as a whole if there were no guarantee that the integrations would continue to work in the long term and could not suddenly fail at any time (as is currently the case). Is anyone already working on a solution? Unfortunately, I am unable to do so. What does the solution will look like? Dirk Liesch (talk) 08:23, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
- It seems toollabs:para/Commons:Special:NewFiles is broken, too—for the same reason, I guess. --Geohakkeri (talk) 09:31, 5 March 2026 (UTC)

can i upload an image that has non-commercial license?
[edit]Hello!
I made (what I think is) a derivative image from an existing image with a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 licence: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/image/290479001
I wanted to make sure I could distribute it under the same license - but does Wiki Commons only allow images that can be commercially used?
Thanks! TastyCheese34 (talk) 15:14, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, non-commercial licenses are not allowed, we have a whole page dedicated to why the licensing policy is as it is. The obelisk itself is long out of copyright, the only copyright here is the copyright of the photographer. This means that free images can exist, and we actually do have a number of them: Category:Black Obelisk. Maybe you'll find one there which you can use. --rimshottalk 17:18, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
PDF or DJVU text file with multiple authors?
[edit]Here:
File:Iran-nuclear-snapback-E3-foreign-ministers-letter-28-August-2025.pdf
The three authors should appear as s:Author:David Lammy, U.K Secretary of State for Foreign Commonwealth, and Development s:Author:Jean-Noel Barrot, French Foreign Minister for Europe s:Author:Johann Wadephul, German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs
Instead, when I indexed and transcluded into wikisource, the names and titles appear as one big blob:
s:E3_joint_letter_to_the_President_of_the_UN_Security_Council_requesting_snapback_sanctions_on_Iran
I used a wizard to make the commons file; is there an override_author field, as on wikisource?

- Certainly there is nothing you can do in this respect at time of upload with the Upload Wizard; it is intended to make the common cases easy, and probably 98% of users never need anything else, but there are all sorts of edge cases it cannot handle. Those are handled by editing after the fact.
- The wizard uses Template:Information, but that is not the only template available to describe a file on Commons. I don't offhand know of one that has a structured way of expressing multiple authors, though; I see that Template:Book does not (it just suggests "various authors" as a value when there is more than one).
- If no one here has a good answer for you, you might just try seeing what has been done with analogous cases. I suspect that "just text" (and maybe Creator templates when available) is typical. - Jmabel ! talk 00:57, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
Commons Upload Wizard is broken
[edit]-- at least for uploading Flickr photos. I've been trying to upload some of my photos for 3 days: no joy. Tool just stalls when I give it the Flickr photo URL.
I've used this tool in the past to upload tens, likely hunreds, of Flickr photos. I hope the maintainers can fix it. I'm happy to explain my problem. OK, here's the URL of the one I just tried to upload: https://www.flickr.com/photos/29050464@N06/44596116150/ One of mine, and licensed CC-A-SA. Pete Tillman (talk) 04:04, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

- I'm having the same problem. For now you can use https://flickr2commons.toolforge.org/ but a long term fix should be implemented. Have you reported the problem to Phabricator? - Fuzheado (talk) 12:15, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

- @Tillman, @Heylenny, @Fuzheado, @ArthurWilliamJack, @PascalHD -- from a comment on the Phab task, hopefully this might now be resolved. Would you mind retrying your Flickr uploads when it's convenient for you (if they haven't already been imported through flickr2commons) & leaving a comment here if it does/doesn't work? Many thanks in advance :) —a smart kitten[meow] 19:54, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- @A smart kitten, I tried and uploading individual images now works fine, but uploading photostreams/albums isn't fully working.
- Previously, you can enter the URL of a photostream/album, and it will display a list of images (max. 500 of them), each with a small square thumbnail and a checkbox to select them.
- Currently, only the checkboxes are displayed and none of the thumbnails are displayed. However, selecting the checkboxes does upload their corresponding images, the problem is I just cannot see what I am selecting. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 20:09, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Tvpuppy Thanks for the reply - do you mind posting a link to the album in question, so I can try it in UploadWizard myself? Best, —a smart kitten[meow] 20:18, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- @A smart kitten Here is one as an example: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lucasartoni/albums/72157711331436398/. For me, I just see rows of checkboxes, but no thumbnails. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 20:21, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Tvpuppy Hrm, yeah, I also see that. I'll report it to the folks on Phab. Thanks for the report! —a smart kitten[meow] 20:23, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- Same here. Another album example: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lselibrary/albums/72177720326611499 uploads are going through fine now, just trickier flying blind without the thumbs. Thanks again, all. ArthurWilliamJack (talk) 20:33, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

Upload OC?
[edit]I want to make my own profile page on Wikipedia, but when reading the Upload Wizard page, it says that I can't upload characters I drew. Is it fine if I did create an Original Character (OC) without any inspitation?
Thanks and have a great weekend.
Best regards: AbatoriOfficial (talk) 23:54, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
- Hello @AbatoriOfficial, characters that are completely your own original work do not violate copyright. However, as outlined in our scope, Commons is meant to illustrate and educate concepts, and personal art that lack educational use may be deleted.
- (for example, an OC that could be used to illustrate wikt:en:yinglet is in scope, but one that's only of personal interest to the author may not be in scope, such material may be suitable elsewhere.) HyperAnd [talk] 01:01, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

[edit]I am trying to upload an individual photo of myself. It was taken on my phone by my family but seems it will not upload. What am I doing wrong? Ted Barton (talk) 07:02, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Ted Barton: you encountered an automated filter that stops new users from uploading low-resolution jpegs by cross-wiki. This is because many such images have been copyright violations taken from the web. In your case it was a false positive, but a 1024x682 image seems really low for a modern mobile phone. You should be able to upload it directly in Commons:Upload Wizard. MKFI (talk) 08:11, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- Although if it was taken by [a member of] your family, they own the copyright, not you. See COM:THIRD, there are several ways to sort this out. - Jmabel ! talk 01:59, 8 March 2026 (UTC)

NC and no derivative license for Zr image?
[edit]I want to use an image from here and was under the impression that you all did not have NC (or non derivative) terms in your licenses. But this image says that the license is NC and non-derivative. What gives?
See: File:Zirconium crystal bar and 1cm3 cube.jpg. ~2026-14665-91 (talk) 14:37, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- The file is multi-licensed. Contributors to Wikimedia Commons can offer as many licenses for a file as they wish, as long as at least one of them meets the criteria for free licenses specified in the licensing policy. For example, files under a "non-commercial" license are OK only if they are at the same time also released under a free license that allows commercial use. In this specific case, {{FAL}} meets the criteria, making the picture suitable for Commons. --Geohakkeri (talk) 15:26, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, kindly.
- 1. Can I make a derivative work also? E.g. cropping it?
- 2. And are there any share alike requirements?
- The license is fairly short and available in many languages. You can read it in full to get authoritative answers.[10] But yes, it seems that the permission to create derivative works is granted with some share alike requirements. --Geohakkeri (talk) 16:21, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

GCDACE (talk) 15:23, 7 March 2026 (UTC) SIET Presentation: A New Standard for Trust and Compliance in Tax Exemptions
Introduction Thank you for having me. The Need for a Comprehensive Solution SIET was created to address a challenge that currently lacks a complete technological solution: ensuring trust, traceability, and compliance in the relationships between businesses and social organizations, especially when tax exemptions are involved. An International Standard for Traceability and Auditing This platform establishes an international standard for certifying, validating, and auditing tax exemptions using verifiable criteria compatible with multiple jurisdictions. SIET combines verified digital identity, complete traceability, and continuous auditing. In practical terms, every transaction linked to social value can be verified, traced, and becomes fully trustworthy. SIET Marketplace: A Regulated and Transparent Ecosystem The SIET Marketplace, a regulated ecosystem where organizations and businesses can both offer and acquire products and services, is built upon this infrastructure. Within this environment, it is possible to operate with integrated financial and logistics services and conduct transactions under automated compliance rules, guaranteeing traceability and algorithmic governance at all times. Economic Impact and Differentiating Value The economic model projects between $7.5 billion and $9.5 billion in annual global net revenue. However, beyond the magnitude of this figure, the true value of SIET lies in the creation of a global standard in an area currently characterized by fragmentation, opacity, and reputational risk.translator: Google Translate (bolding is my own) via Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 16:18, 7 March 2026 (UTC) |

How to confirm public domain status?
[edit]Hello,
I recently obtained a hard drive given to me by the Departmental Archives of Yvelines (France). It contains a collection of several tens of thousands of photographs taken by the journalist Jean Lattès. The staff at the archives told me that after his death, Jean Lattès donated all of his negatives to the archives and placed all of his works in the public domain.
Among these photographs, there are many images of clear encyclopedic value, particularly documenting everyday life in France during the 1960s. I would like to upload some of them to Commons, but I want to make sure I do it properly. What kind of confirmation should I request from the Departmental Archives of Yvelines to prove that the images are under a free license? I am concerned that the archives might provide an informal confirmation, so I would like to know what kind of document I should request from them to avoid any doubts about the licensing later.
Thank you in advance for your answers. Wizly-08 (talk) 15:28, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Wizly-08: Hi, and welcome. Please try to get them to provide permission including the donation paperwork as described at VRT (or the French version VRT/fr), with a carbon copy to you. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:37, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
Wizly-08 (talk) 22:04, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

How do I upload album art under fair use?
[edit]I've seen that album covers uploaded to Wikimedia Commons have a fair use label and some kind of template, but I have no idea how to upload a file indicating fair use and specifying this template. Werwerton2525 (talk) 18:28, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- Fair use is not allowed on Commons, see: COM:Fair use. Such files are to be deleted on sight here. It is likely that you were mislead by fair use files on (most likely) the English Wikipedia. Please look there for guidance, maybe on en:WP:FAIRUSE. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:01, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

Cannot add source information to File:Anjing Chihuahua.jpg - AbuseFilter blocking
[edit]Hello,
I am trying to add source information to File:Anjing Chihuahua.jpg, which is already being used in Wikipedia Indonesia article "Chihuahua (anjing)".
The file needs: - Author information (Dedy Budiman) - License template {{Cc0}} - Categories
However, Wikimedia Commons Abuse Filter keeps blocking my edit even when I use the official {{Own}} template. I believe my edit is constructive - I'm adding essential information to prevent file deletion.
Could an admin please help add this information, or grant me autoconfirmed status so I can edit my own files?
Thank you, User:Dedybudiman08

- @Dedybudiman08: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/313 by altering or removing the standard page section headings as a new or anonymous user. Please do not do that, as such edits by new and anonymous users are considered to be vandalism. Try previewing your changes. Admin GPSLeo saw a need for and wrote that filter named "Protect page section headings" with note "Prevent all not autopatrolled users from altering or removing the standard page section headings." You also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/303 by not having anything on the first line. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:34, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- Dedybudiman08 Aside from the abuse filter issue, your files were tagged with "no source", which means that the person who added that tag (The Squirrel Conspiracy) did not think that your own work claim was sufficient. This may be due to most of your recent uploads being deleted. See COM:VRT for your options. HurricaneZetaC 23:35, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

- Hi @Jeff G.
- Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I really appreciate the feedback – it helps me understand how Wikimedia Commons works better.
- You're right, I'm still quite new to Commons and didn't realize that editing page section headings would trigger those filters. I'll be more careful with my edits going forward and will always use preview mode before making changes.
- About the File:Anjing Chihuahua.jpg file – I'd like to add proper source information to resolve the "no source" tag. Since I now understand that directly editing might trigger the filter again, I'm wondering if you could help me add the following information manually:
- Own work
- The file is already being used in the Wikipedia Indonesia article about Chihuahua ("Chihuahua (anjing)"), so it has clear educational value. I just need to document that properly.
- Would that be possible? I'm committed to following Commons guidelines going forward – I just need a bit of guidance since this is my first time uploading structured content here.
- Thank you again for your patience and help! Dedybudiman08 (talk) 05:02, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Dedybudiman08: the only way you will trigger that filter again is if you once again try to remove the heading.
- At this point, the correct place to discuss keeping the file is Commons:Deletion requests/File:Anjing Chihuahua.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 05:15, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
I'm creating a new page and I would like to upload photos , how
[edit]I'm creating a new page and I would like to upload photos , how Nenekiki (talk) 14:08, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- Please read COM:First steps, COM:Licensing, COM:SCOPE and COM:THIRD. Otherwise, you're likely bound to run into some classical issues about copyrights and the project purposes. We can't negate the need that you've got to get a bit of competency (see for instance en:WP:Competence is required) and to learn some basics on the Wikimedia world.
- Of course, we're happy in guiding through any issues still present when somebody already undertook a visible try at bettering themselves by learning, but simply dropping a "Please tell me how to upload photos" is bound to attract a snappy response like RTFM. Or "Open your browser, go to the upload page, select relevant folders on your HDD and upload them." Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 14:31, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
Image flagged for deletion?

In the longer term, user page images are accepted for people who contribute to a Wikimedia website. Problems with photos I upload
[edit]Hello, photos that I take and upload to Wikimedia Commons keep getting struck down. I believe there's a problem with how I'm uploading them. I email the photos from my phone to my computer, then I download the photos to computer, then I upload them to Wikimedia. It's quite confusing as I'm the one who is taking these photos, however, they're getting taken down. If you would happen to know or be able to help, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much! Rt. Hon. Chase W. Marrie (talk) 20:06, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "photos keep getting struck down"? Ruslik (talk) 20:39, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Rt. Hon. Chase W. Marrie: I see a fair number of photos you have uploaded of Newfoundland and Labrador politicians and aides that have been deleted. I believe most of these were discussed at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Rt. Hon. Chase W. Marrie. For example, for File:Daniel Joseph Greene.png, you date it as 1894, but the only provenance you give is "MUN Archives", no usable bibliographical information. (For examples of sufficient bibliographical information on photos from that period, see File:Elton E. Ainsworth.jpg, File:Amos Brown, Seattle, ca 1885 (MOHAI 181).jpg, or File:Charles Edward Patten (American Lumbermen; vol. 3, 1906).png). And for an image like this, it certainly wasn't the use of your phone and computer that were at issue.
- (That said, I don't doubt your 1894 date on File:Daniel Joseph Greene.png, and there are few cases where an 1894 photo from Canada would still be copyrighted. The photographer would have to be known and to have lived at least another 61 years after taking the photo. But you didn't argue the case in a timely manner. There is almost nothing from you in the discussions at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Rt. Hon. Chase W. Marrie. This can still be addressed, but it is no surprise that when you don't engage in a discussion like this, things get deleted; they can be undeleted, but it's a more complicated process.)
- Or for a file like File:Official Seal of the Town of Cape St. George, Newfoundland and Labrador.png, you photographed a pin showing the seal. Clearly someone designed the seal and possibly someone else would have a second copyright for designing the pin, depending on how much originality it introduced (likely barring your ability to grant cc-zero). - Jmabel ! talk 21:17, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, these images need more information. However they are undoubtedly in the public domain. I restored File:Daniel Joseph Greene.png, and uploaded File:Frederick Charles Alderdice.jpg (in place of the small PNG version). I also created the corresponding categories. Yann (talk) 18:15, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Yann, thank you very much for restoring the D. J. Greene file! I’m very appreciative as he does not have a photo on Wikimedia. Thank you, all the best! Rt. Hon. Chase W. Marrie (talk) 18:36, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

permission to post
[edit]My aunt, the artist Ellen Rosalie Simon is listed here without any illustrations of her work. She died in 2011. I have an extensive collection of her work and would like to post a few examples. I do not believe that any photos I have are copyrighted. Can I post? How? Thanks Paul L Mendelsohn Paul L Mendelsohn (talk) 20:45, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- That's a great endeavour, and Commons or even the whole Wikimedia world will be happy to have such material from Ellen Rosalie Simon, Paul L Mendelsohn. As you said "aunt", that would mean that there could be other, even closer relatives (a parent of you, for instance). Copyrights are rights that will become part of an estate. And typically, the first heirs are persons closer than nephews to the person who passed, like spouses or siblings.
- On the other hand, if the family is not too big and/or the bequeather left a will clarifying the copyright status, e.g. by stating that "XY is to inherit my works", the prerequisites for doing it by the books are there. It boils down to having the legitimate heir acquiescing into a free licence, in fact, for the finishing touches, there're already tags like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} available. But there's work to be done before:
- ascertain the actual right holders
- get in touch with VRT, see Commons:Volunteer Response Team#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?
- follow the guidances and procedures and transmit needed evidence about actual rights holders and their accord to a free license (don't worry, the VRT is committed to the protection of private data);
- only then would an upload be in order. So, to sum up: yes, you can upload work examples of your aunt, but only after clearing mandatory prerequisites. It can be a hassle, but you'd help a very welcome betterment and growth of our collections. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:10, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc What about works by her from before 1949? Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Canada isn't that clear to me, but it says "All photographs (except those subject to Crown Copyright, for which see below) taken before 1 January 1949 are in the public domain." I don't know if that applies to works of art as well. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:20, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Gråbergs Gråa Sång: when encountering opening posts like the one here, I think that it's the best to apply en:Ockham's razor: assuming that the poster only has a basic hunch about (the existence of) copyright issues or troubles and the will to stay out of them, so answering with the basics and disregarding exceptions at the moment would be the way to go. Bombarding such people with intricacies of copyright laws on which even we regulars tend to disagree (like TOO, DM) or which would need some advanced elaboration about details on work histories (publication dates, Hirtle chart) is bound to overwhelm them at first, not doing any good for the purpose of advancing the project. That would only be steps further down the line, when needed, and when some foundations on copyright understanding are laid. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:12, 9 March 2026 (UTC)

own AI prompt
[edit]May I use own AI prompt for creating an image Write-Always-online (talk) 13:10, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Write-Always-online: Your AI-generated image will probably be out of scope for Wikimedia Commons. Please read COM:AI. Thanks, Yann (talk) 13:53, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- If it supports the purpose of Commons and the broader Wikimedia system, yes
- However, I'd like to correct an assertion on your talk page of CC-BY-SA 4.0 copyright; AI-generated images without human authorship sufficient for copyright assertions are automatically in the public domain ({{PD-algorithm}})
- You should also be on the alert for anti-AI users (I am one, personally), and refrain from using AI as a communication tool
- Commons:AI-generated media may be of aid to you (I did see Yann's reply which came up while I was writing) Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 13:57, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
Archival image use
[edit]Hi! I am an Archivist at a large university with a substantial special collections. A researcher has asked for permission to use several images from our Archives from the WWII era, for use on a Wikipedia page, whose creators are unknown. Through the donation process we are the designated caretakers of these images and through fair use and library exemptions, we are allowed to grant usage to media outlets, publishers, and others for use and we do on a regular basis. There are no options through the online image permissions form to reflect this, and after attempting to go through the "We Hold Copyright" option of the Interactive Release Generator, I was met with curt and unhelpful emails from a Wikipedia editor. What is the proper avenue for our patron to use our archival images on Wikipedia? Le lapin gris (talk) 16:21, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- "fair use and library exemptions"
- That is not the manner of operations on Wikimedia Commons
- "What is the proper avenue for our patron to use our archival images on Wikipedia?"
- If you intend to release them under a free licence, talk to the Volunteer Response Team Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 16:40, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, that's what I just asked. I was hoping someone might have some insight or could relate an experience submitting archival images, rather than just be told to "Contact customer support". Le lapin gris (talk) 16:50, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Le lapin gris: Hi, The issue is that these images are probably orphan works, and the university is not the copyright holder. Depending on where and by whom they were taken, and where they were first published they may or may not be in the public domain. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:49, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- We should be able to give permission according to this. Le lapin gris (talk) 16:53, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for asking, and for your offer. However, what you suggest is not possible in the Wikimedia universe. That is because one core principle of Wikimedia is to host content that can be reused freely by anyone in the public. The exception under 108h would not meet this requirement. There are three possibilities of how the archival images could be hosted by Wikimedia: A) If the images are in the public domain (i.e. their copyright has expired), or B) If the images are still in copyright and the copyright holder offers a free license (i.e. a license that allows free reuse by the public), or C) If the images are still in copyright and their use meets the exception of fair use in the particular context of an article in Wikipedia. Option A (public domain) requires knowledge of when and where the images were first published, the context of that publication, the identity of their creator(s) and their death year(s). Option B (free license) requires the same information to determine if a copyright exists, plus the explicit issuance of a free license by the holder(s) of the copyright, but such licensing seems excluded by the wording of your question. Option C (fair use) is very unlikely, unless the images are used for example to illustrate the pictorial work of the creator(s) of the images. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:49, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
- We should be able to give permission according to this. Le lapin gris (talk) 16:53, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
