Discovering Latex, Texas: A Rural Community with Rich History

Latex is a small rural community located on Farm Road 1999 about eighteen miles northeast of Marshall in northeastern Harrison County. Its location on the Texas and Louisiana border inspired the name of the town, the combination of the abbreviations of both states. Settlers, including many African Americans, began farming in the region of Latex after the Civil War. At least one school operated in the area, probably around the early 1900s. No population estimates were available until 2000 when the farming community reported seventy-five residents. County highway maps also showed a cemetery in the area.
