Legacies: A History Journal for Dallas and North Central Texas is a semiannual journal (spring and fall) publishing research articles and photo essays focused primarily on the history of Dallas but also encompassing a geographical area comprising the surrounding counties. It was launched in 1989 as a collaborative project by the Dallas Historical Society and the Dallas County Heritage Society (which managed Old City Park) as a benefit for their members. Other local organizations whose missions include preserving and promoting local history have joined as sponsors. As of 2025 the sponsoring institutions are the Dallas Historical Society, the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University, Preservation Dallas, and Preservation Park Cities.

The founding editor of the journal is Michael V. Hazel. He has been assisted by a graphic designer, a book review editor, and editorial assistants, as well as an editorial advisory board consisting primarily of history faculty at area universities as well as independent scholars. Manuscripts are reviewed by two outside scholars before being accepted for publication.

The journal is linked to the annual Legacies Dallas History Conference, launched in 1999 by six area historical organizations. In 2025 sixteen organizations collaborated in presenting the conference. Held on the last Saturday in January, each conference usually features four to six papers as well as a panel discussion or a “Conversation with a History Maker.” The best papers presented at the conference, in edited form, are subsequently published in the journal. After serving as coordinator of the conference for the first twenty years, Hazel turned over responsibilities to a coordinator selected by the steering committee. As of 2025 Jann Mackey fills that position.

The Meadows Foundation provided initial funding to launch Legacies in 1989. Since then several other foundations and individuals have contributed support. As of 2025 supporters were the Summerfield G. Roberts Foundation, the Summerlee Foundation, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Decherd (through a donor advised fund).

All past issues of Legacies have been digitized and are available on the University of North Texas Portal to Texas History.
