Leon Valley is near the junction of Loop 410 and State Highway 16, ten miles northwest of downtown San Antonio in northwestern Bexar County. The community was developed in the 1950s and, to prevent possible annexation by the city of San Antonio, incorporated in 1952. The community had a population of 536 in 1960 and 1,960 in 1970. The number of residents greatly increased to 9,581 by 1990. In 2020 the population was 11,542. Leon Valley, which operates under a council-manager form of government, has a police department, fire department, and public library. The Leon Valley Historical Society, which began in the 1970s, has worked to preserve the Huebner-Onion Homestead and surrounding land. The homestead, which received a Texas Historical Marker in 2007, was named for Joseph Huebner, an Austrian native and early settler who acquired 800 acres in the region in 1858 and built a home and stagecoach stop.
