George Menefee was born in Tennessee, the son of Lucy (Sutherland) and Thomas Menefee. In 1823 the family moved to Morgan County, Alabama, and in 1830 to Stephen F. Austin's colony in Texas. Menefee, a single man, received title to one-third league of land now in Gonzales County. In late 1835 he participated in the siege of Bexar. On March 11, 1837, his honorable discharge from the army was audited. He was married to Letitia A. Mercer, and the couple settled in Jackson County. In 1883 a building owned by Menefee was used as the temporary county courthouse. Menefee was one of the chief stewards of the Edna Methodist church and served on the building committee for the construction of a new house of worship. He died in Edna in 1891.
