Shady Hollow Community Overview - History, Amenities, and Development

Shady Hollow is a residential community located about ten miles southwest of Austin in southwestern Travis County near the Travis and Hays county border. Development on 600 acres began in 1972. In 1978 residents organized the Shady Hollow Homeowners Association to counter alleged misrepresentation by the developer, Austin Savings and Loan. Owners accused the developer of advancing much more dense construction on the 600 acres than originally advertised. An agreement between the two parties resulted in the construction of parks and recreational facilities including the Park on Doe Run along Slaughter Creek. The community also had a community center, tennis courts, a basketball court, and other amenities. In 1984 the developer deeded ownership of the park and recreational facilities to the homeowners group in accordance with the agreement. Travis County provided police protection, and the Manchaca Volunteer Fire Department furnished fire protection. The first population statistics were available in 2000 when Shady Hollow reported 5,140 residents.
